Thursday, December 30th, 2010
Another year has come and gone at the studio. It has been a full and rewarding year with wonderful experiences and new directions. We will wave goodbye to 2010 and get ready to meet 2011.
Some of the new directions for 2010 included the History of Motorcycles # 1183 and A Child’s View of the Moon # 1186.
On the motorcycle piece I tried to capture the raw thrill of motorcycles by creating a dust cloud and executing a looser ”sketchy” surface technique.
By adding more texture and not defining every detail, the essence of the scene feels stronger.
On the moon plaque, the sculpting technique is similar. But the wonderful verse, ” The Moon is so full he must have eaten all the stars”, is the trigger for our imaginations. The quote came from a 4 year old girl named Megan. I really can’t express how much I enjoyed sculpting Megan’s observation of the moon. Since many Carruth sculptures already have a children’s book feeling, the quote from Megan made the sculpture complete. In 2011, I hope to receive a few more observations of nature in the form of children’s quotes.
Over the holidays I’ve been working on a sculpture that is influenced by how much people love and look forward to their morning coffee. Again, the sculpting technique is a little looser, but the scene is full of delightful details. Naturally, I’ve included some family pets in the composition. Anyway, the characters are coming along nicely and I can’t wait to see how it unfolds. Because so many people display their sculptures indoors, I’m more comfortable choosing topics that are not garden related. Plus, people who post comments and photographs on our Facebook page, allow me to better understand how the sculptures are displayed.
2010 was full of new experiences and subject matter. It seems fitting to mark this passage with The Birthday Fairy, a new design we introduced only weeks ago. Because of the internet connection to our customers, 2011 should be just as exciting.
So, thank you for another good year! Everyone at Carruth Studio will be busily creating and shipping original new designs that serve as fun and meaningful gifts.

Another year has come and gone at our little company…
Thursday, December 23rd, 2010
As Christmas and the end of the year approach I find myself thinking about both. One aspect of the holidays I particularly enjoy is rediscovering decorations that have been packed away all year. Specifically the hand made ornaments and drawings our children have gifted us over the years. I love sitting and reminiscing, while surrounded by hand made decorations that say ” to Mom and Dad”.
And somehow, another year has come and gone at our little company. Everyone at Carruth Studio (all 19 of us) has worked extra hard and feels especially grateful to do what we do. We appreciate the conversations with people that have used our sculptures as fun or meaningful gifts. Whether they are used as a ”Thank You” or “Thinking of You” gift, it feels good to know that our images are used for more than just decorative accents. Certainly we have fun making light hearted sculptures that make people smile, but it’s the meaningful gifts and stories that stick in our memories.
From dogs and cats in cars to angel sculptures–it has been a wonderful year. Who knows what sculpted images will emerge from the studio in 2011? Facebook has allowed me to listen to stories and see photographs from around the country. In the past, I quietly strolled our Garden Smiles gallery, listening to people discover and talk about how they intended to use the sculptures. But now I can go to my computer, while still at my desk, and enjoy the same experience. The wonderful quote from 4 year old Megan, about the moon eating all of the stars, is a perfect example of this.
Another satisfying project this year was the 1000 lb limestone sculpture of St. Clare of Assisi now placed in a memorial garden near Cleveland. Although I don’t carve stone as often as the early years, it felt great to use a hammer and chisels again.
So thank you for taking an interest in Carruth Studio. We truly do appreciate the support of our valued customers. To everyone we’ve come in contact with over the years, have a wonderful Holiday and Happy New Year!
Sincerely,
George, Deb and everyone at Carruth Studio

A Child’s View Of The Moon
Tuesday, December 7th, 2010
People always ask me where I find inspiration for my work. Well, I’ve always been daydreaming when I should be paying attention. As a result, I’m constantly aware of my surroundings: Sounds, textures, people. So when it comes time to sketch out an idea, I have huge amounts of unrelated images floating around in my imagination. Usually I’m drawn to a texture or shape that seems interesting. Sometimes it’s a scene or emotion. Anyway, something always bubbles to the surface and I’m never sure what it might be.
Several months ago I read a young child’s description of the moon. According to four-year-old Megan Vollmar, “the moon is so full it must have eaten all the stars.” Megan’s comment and her perspective sparked my imagination. I was entranced with her view of the moon.
Last weekend we hosted an artist signing at Garden Smiles, our gallery and retail shop in Waterville, Ohio. Megan and her family came to Garden Smiles and I had a chance to meet her and to sign a piece especially for her. We both enjoyed that. Megan’s mom has since emailed to say that she is also signing her moon and has offered to sign others.
You’ve probably noticed that animals, nature and folklore are the themes that turn up in most of my sculptures. I guess I’m still a small child at heart…in awe of nature.
I’ll be talking about my work with Cynthia and Jack Ford on “Coffee with the Fords” this Sunday. The show airs at 12:30 PM on WTVG.
We’ll be hosting one more artist signing at Garden Smiles this Sunday, December 12th from 12 Noon – 5PM if you are within driving distance of Waterville, Ohio. If you aren’t able to join us, you can still find a limited number of signed pieces on our Carruth Studio website.
And now for one more piece of shameless promotion: if you enjoyed this post, please “like” it and share it with your friends and family. We can use all the help we can get to spread the word about this blog and about Carruth Studio. Thanks!

Foster Mom Chosen as Winner of Carruth Studio Mother’s Day Contest
Thursday, December 2nd, 2010
4-30-2010-Waterville, Ohio—Carruth Studio has announced the winner of its Mother’s Day Contest: a foster mother whose sister entered the contest on her behalf. “We asked the entrants to tell us why they thought their special mom should win the contest and were so touched by the loving stories we received,” said Deb Carruth. “It was difficult to choose a winner because each of the entrants were obviously well-loved and deserving. However, we believe that fostering is such an important contribution that we chose Barbara’s sister.” According to Deb Carruth, Barbara hopes to surprise her sister with the piece “Mother’s Plaque” on Mother’s Day. The prize will be personalized and signed by sculptor, George Carruth.
The winning Mother’s Day Contest entry reads:
I would give the Mother’s Plaque to my sister. She is a mom of a 13-year-old boy and the foster mom of a 2-year-old boy she is currently trying to adopt. She has fostered 5 children over the past 3 years and has been the temporary foster mother to several children who needed someone to take care of them briefly, during transitions. I admire her commitment to children and to giving them a safe home, whether it be for a few days, months, or years. It takes someone special to act as a foster parent to children who often know no parents’ love. It takes someone special to mother a child as if he is your own, only to say goodbye when it is time for him to return to his biological family. I am proud of my sister’s efforts to help children who need a mother’s love, security, and encouragement to follow their dreams.
“Our idea in holding this contest was to make people think about the reasons we honor mothers on Mother’s Day. The people who have visited our Facebook page have commented that they’ve enjoyed reading the contest stories,” she continued. “Our sculptures make beautiful gifts for Mother’s Day and we hear over and over again how much people appreciate being able to give such unique and whimsical gifts.”
The hand-cast, and hand-finished, stone sculptures are designed by nationally renowned artist and sculptor, George Carruth.
Carruth Studio sculptures are used in garden and landscaping, interiors, as gifts for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Christmas, weddings and anniversaries–and especially as an expression of sympathy or memorial. Back by popular demand! Carruth Studio announces a second daylong artist signing on Saturday May 8th from 10-5 PM.
05.03.2010– Waterville, Ohio—Carruth Studio receives regular requests for artist signing events, which allow collectors of Carruth sculptures to have their purchases signed by renowned American sculptor, George Carruth. A recent artist signing event drew steady streams of fans, eager to visit with the artist, review the new additions to the collection, purchase gifts for Mother’s Day and have each piece individually signed by the artist himself. In response to requests from customers and fans, George Carruth has scheduled a second artist signing on Saturday, May 8th.

Carruth Book Donation to Claire’s Day Event Inspires “Special Adoption” Effort
Thursday, December 2nd, 2010
Children will be asked to share ideas on how they can care for their special “If I Were A Dinosaur” book
5-14-2010– Waterville, Ohio—This year Claire’s Day will include a special book adoption effort. Claire’s Day, held in Maumee, Ohio, is the free family book festival held annually in honor of Claire Lynsey Rubini. 100 copies of “If I Were A Dinosaur”, by George Carruth and Libby Carruth Krock, will be given away to the children. The books are new and in good condition but have covers that are slightly flawed, making them special books in search of special homes.
“If I Were A Dinosaur” tells the story of George, who, instead of paying attention in school, daydreams that he and his classmates have become dinosaurs. George enjoys his new, scary claws and razor-sharp teeth, but discovers that an attitude of “all play and no work” may be the reason that dinosaurs became extinct.
“If I Were A Dinosaur” is written by George Carruth, a nationally recognized sculptor and experienced daydreamer. His ever-present imagination has inspired hundreds of designs that continue to be collected worldwide. Libby Carruth Krock, a painter and illustrator illustrates the book, adding her own colorful interpretation to her father’s story.
“These are beautiful books,” said Julie Rubini, Claire’s Day founder and mother of Claire Lynsey Rubini. “They are new and in good condition although some of them have minor flaws in their covers, which makes them special.” According to Julie Rubini, the books will be “adopted” into special families. The children will be offered suggestions about how to take good care of their books by reading them and spending time with them every day. Each child will be asked for their ideas about taking care of the book they are adopting.
As staunch supporters of Claire’s Day from its inception, George and Deborah Carruth have worked with Julie and Brad Rubini each year. The Rubinis give their board members Carruth sculptures as thank you gifts for their volunteer efforts on behalf of Claire’s Day. “Brad and I enjoy giving the Carruth sculptures to our board members,” said Julie Rubini. “This year are delighted to be able to offer these beautiful books to the children who attend this year’s event.”
Claire’s Day activities include live music, storytellers, local celebrity readers, awards for reading and other book-related hands-on activities. Claire’s Day will be held Saturday, May 15 at the Maumee Library located at 501 River Road in Maumee, Ohio. The event begins at 9:30 AM and runs until 5:00PM. For more information call 419.259.5360 or visit http://ClairesDay.org.

Carruth sculptures also work well as fundraising incentives and the firm has a special fundraising program available. About Garden Smiles
Carruth Studio’s gift shop and gallery, Garden Smiles, is located in Waterville, Ohio. Garden Smiles, the brainchild of George’s wife, Deb Carruth, is the only place where you will find the complete collection of his sculpted designs–more than 250 pieces—and the newest designs that are not yet available anywhere else.
Besides being a gallery for George’s sculptures, Garden Smiles is also a place to test market new colors, mediums and ideas he may be working on. Collectors have an opportunity to take home a design or color that may never find its way into our catalog. Occasionally, he is available the day of your visit to sign your purchase. Garden Smiles is open Monday through Friday from 10-6PM EST, Saturdays from 10-5PM EST and Sundays from 12-5PM EST. For directions, visit http://carruthstudio.com or call 419. 878.5412.
