George Looks for Feedback on Gnome Idea
I don’t always do little 3D sketches, but this flying Gnome idea grabbed my attention. This is an exercise to explore how little flying Gnomes would look. OK, Gnomes have been around forever, but I wanted to make tiny flying Gnomes that were more part of the insect world. So by giving them insect wings, they can flutter around from flower to flower. This tiny sketch was originally a model for a full size cast stone plaque series, but as it came to life, the idea of turning it into a strong magnet for the fridge or file cabinet developed. So, what do you think? Do you even like the concept of tiny flying Gnomes? Do you picture them as full size cast stone plaques or a little fridge magnets? Maybe both? I’d love your input. Good idea or too much time on my hands. George

Hi George,
I love everything magical and of nature, so this new idea is really appealing to me…. the only suggestion I have is for any small item like the magnet idea…. it would be awesome if they were NOT stuck on a plaque type backing.. can you do a tiny sculpture that is freestanding?? Will the wings hold up etc? LOL I think a real flying gnome would not be attached to anything at all!
Yes these would be cute as a magnet, but I would think this little guy no matter how small or big would look so cut out among the flowers. You wouldn’t have to make them very large, that way people would have to come closer to look at him and also to smell the flowers!!!
Thanks for all your work.
(A variety of flying gnomes…. how cute would that be!!)
I have loved Gnomes since I was a kid. I have them all over my house and garden but you wouldn’t notice them unless you looked really close. My six grandchildren love it when they come across one of grandma’s gnomes. I think the smaller the better, that is what makes them so whimsical. Gnomes love to help out but do not like to be seen much. My family has even done Christmas themes with gnomes like Gnome for the Holidays or There is no place like Gnome. This last Christmas I ordered several of your fridge magnets for gifts and also purchased some of your polar bear plaques and of course for myself I bought the old gnome lady with the bunnies. Me and my family have enjoyed your pieces in years past on our trips to the central coast in CA. The Gallery in Morro Bay always carried some of your pieces. Looking forward to seeing all you come up with.
I love the idea of the Flying Gnomes, another option may be to put them on a durable wire/stand that can be inserted into flower pots so that they truly are flying from flower to flower.
I like the idea of magnets or plant stakes. But the gnome itself? I’ll take 2 right now! LOL I don’t think you will ever have too much time on your hands!!!
I LOVE the gnome idea. Its a great idea for Plant Poke…something to put in potted plants and flowers. Either as part of a gift or just for myself around the house. I love your work but dont have a big garden and not a lot of money to spend on “treats”. I treat myself or give your work as gifts. I would love to have some of these in some of my house plants. They would be big sellers in floral shops too. SOmething to poke down into a potted plant to make it something extra special. Please pursue this avenue! Your work always makes me smile!
I love him! Would love yo have a bigger gnome to put in my newly landscaped front yard.
I LOVE the flying Gnomes and I love the idea of making them smaller. I also think the idea of a variety of gnomes to place in the garden is fabulous!! I have been a collector of you work for years and give many pieces for gifts! i think you are amazing!
Love the plaque idea. Off subject: I would love to see a “No Soliciting” grumpy face plaque that I could hang at my front door!
Thanks Janet, George is standing right here so he has “heard” your comment…too bad keep out plaque doesn’t work for you. We do have plaques you could personalize with that message, but not a grumpy face one….someday I want to see the garden smile with an area you can personalize. keep out would be perfect, we shall see!
I’d love to see a plaque or 3D self-standing figure (maybe 6″ x 6″?) of a gnome sitting (maybe on a toadstool?) playing a small harp. It’d be a great gift for all the harpers out there who collect everything harp-related.
I like the idea of the gnome flying – not as a refrigerator magnet. Stainless steel appliances will not hold a magnet and they are difficult to display.
I don’t even understand how I stopped up right here, but I thought this submit was once great. I do not understand who you are however certainly you’re going to a well-known blogger for those who are not already. Cheers!
I know I am late commenting on the idea of flying gnomes but gnomes do good in the forest and even close to houses but they do NOT fly! Fairies fly and they do the jobs that need magic. Gnomes ride around on foxes and squirrels. They act as doctors for the forest animals, release them from traps, and others things similar to those. There are several books-one is Gnomes by Will Huygen and Rien Poortvliet. It is considered among the best.
Thanks Robby that is great information!
